MICHIGAN HOMESCHOOL PROM CRUISE!

Last Friday the Inaugural Michigan Homeschool Prom took place on the Elegant Detroit Princess Riverboat.

Kazz is 16 years old, considered a Junior, but is about to graduate from college with an Associate of Business Degree; so the standard "Senior" prom isn't something that would fly in the Homeschooling world. That is why this prom is a Freshman - Senior Prom. Homeschool Alumni under 21 can also attend as well as friends of homeschoolers.

There were teens in attendance from all over Michigan and Northern Ohio. Kazz and his friends are pictured above at the Detroit Renaissance Center. Kazz and his girlfriend, Beka, are to the right on the deck of the ship. The rest of the crew are pictured below in our yard. What a gorgeous bunch of unsocialized homeschoolers! LOL

Brian and I found out a while back that it is becoming more and more common for homeschooling teens to attend a Statewide Homeschool Prom. We decided that it would be a fun thing to plan a Michigan Homeschool Prom too, so that is exactly what we did. It went so well that we are now officially the Michigan Homeschool Prom sponsors. If you build it, they will come...and they did! :o)

If you know of homeschooling teens who live in Michigan or Northern Ohio who would like to attend the 2010 Michigan Homeschool Prom Cruise on April 30th please feel free to let them know. They can join the Facebook site for updates.

The view from the boat was absolutely amazing. We passed under the Ambassador Bridge twice during the cruise portion of the evening. We began the cruise when it was daylight and it ended after the sun had set so we were all able to get a lot of opportunities for sunset photos. Brian and I took advantage of that.

Here are some highlights of the dancing that occurred that evening. All of this fun took place with clean modern music too...who would have thunk it? :o)

video

I can't get over how pretty the boat was and how smooth the ride was that evening. I had never been on a Paddle boat. I didn't really know what to expect, but it was a pleasant surprise to find out that I couldn't feel the boat moving at all while inside the ship.

When I looked outside I couldn't tell we were moving either. It wasn't until I walked outside that I could appreciate the movement as I enjoyed the evening, breeze. It was a night to remember, though it took me 2 days to recover. The toe right next to my left big toe was numb for those 2 days and I have vowed to wear comfortable shoes next year...and I'm going to stop chaperoning long enough to dance with my husband at least once also!

Hope you all can join us next year too! :o)

MY CAMPING GEAR CHECK LIST

It's that time of year again. We're getting ready to take the kids on some fun homeschool field trips and camping trips. In the process of looking for camping gear I found Streamlight flashlights.

Our family can never have too many flashlights. It seems that every time we camp, the evenings are crazy because the kids often argue over who gets to use the flashlight to roam the campground. We run out of flashlights every time we camp. The problem isn't only that we lose them, but also that they break so dog-gone easily! That's not a good thing because we really cannot have too many on our trips. I use them every time we go.

I have been on the prowl for a practical and durable flashlight and I have finally found one! Streamlight has won a number of approvals from government, industry and independent authorities. These are the flashlights that are provided to the military, law enforcement, and other government organizations. I don't think I'm going out on a limb to say that they will be sturdy and long lasting.

Five sons and a husband can be hard on a flashlight. It didn't take me long to decide to add the military duty flashlights to our camping gear! I can check that off my list. Now to find socks that won't tear. I'll keep you posted!

HAPPY FREE HOMESCHOOLING!

SUN, SUN GO AWAY, COME AGAIN...A LITTLE LATER?

We have birds. We have birds upon our house that have made a nest in the cable wires right next to Daxx and Kole's bedroom window. I used to think that if I bought vinyl shutters that would actually shut, that I could maybe...possibly, squeak out an extra hour of sleep in morning. The shutters would have kept the sun from creeping in to wake the boys up, but now I can't even do that.

These little birdies wake up at the crack of dawn and chirp their little hearts out. Daxx and Kole wake up at 6:00 am to the sound of hungry chicks and I wake up to the sound of 5 year old feet running up and down the hallway.

I wonder if I could prod The Larson Shutter Company to add a shutter option for our feathered friends? *sob* I didn't think so.

CHUCKLES

I came across this fun website recently called Reverendfun.com

I have to check it out every day to see what kind of new cartoon they have rolling. I get a chuckle every time.

I just wanted to post it here for those who like this kind of humor. Everyone needs a little giggle now and then. :o)

FINDING INSURANCE FOR OUR FAMILY VAN

Many homeschooling families have one thing in common. We have large families. We are no exception. We have 5 children and hope to grow that number as time rolls along. A few years ago when we grew from a family of 2 children to a family of 5 in one year, it quickly became apparent that we needed a new vehicle. The days of driving a mini-van were over. With the addition of 3 car seats, the older boys no longer had room to relax. We had quickly outgrown the 7 passenger vehicle.

We bit the bullet and bought a full size, one ton, 15 passenger van. That is now our family "car." We didn't know it before-hand but buying insurance for our family "utility vehicle" was a bit different than buying for a traditional family car. Finding insurance that was affordable took some time.

In the hope to help my fellow large-family-moms find insurance more easily, I'd like to pass along an easy to use website for Van Insurance. Having a quick and easy site to navigate to find quotes can be highly beneficial when trying to compare and contrast rates. I wish I had a handy-dandy site like this to peruse when I needed it.

HOMESCHOOL FREEBIE: OUR KIDS CAN MAKE A VIDEO!

TODAY'S HOMESCHOOL FREEBIE IS...

MEET ME AT THE CORNER: Virtual Field Trip Video's hosted by kids

This is the cutest and most interesting site I've seen that is directed toward and hosted by children. There are so many videos to see. I only browsed the site a little bit and had to pull myself away to write this post.

MEET ME AT THE CORNER, Virtual Field Trips for Kids, is a dynamic, interactive site, which encourages individual expression and participation through video submissions from children worldwide. Through these video pod casts we hope to create a community of children, who learn the art of self-expression and storytelling through video.

In the beginning, the video pod casts highlighted the people, events and history of New York City. As this site grows through children’s submissions, we hope to highlight the people and events of other towns, cities and nations. To date we have video podcasts from California, Colorado, North Carolina, Texas, and Maryland. We are always open to the people and events in your corner of the world.

HELPING OUR TEENS MARKET THEIR SMALL BUSINESSES

As our children become teenagers and young adults one of the most common job ideas they have is to build their own business. Whether online or in person, they have the world at their fingertips. Many home educated teens have started businesses that have grown from a passion they hold dear, such as gaming, babysitting services, tutoring and volunteerism organization.

One of the top concerns for a small business is how to get the word out about the product or service being offered. In the hope to find an answer I began my quest to solve this dilemma. It didn't take long for me to find ProfitFuel. ProfitFuel is one of the fastest growing privately held companies in America. Through its flagship online Clicksmart directory, ProfitFuel helps small businesses drive sales growth by connecting them with potential local customers.

They recently announced that they have been named to the 28th annual Inc. 500 list of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the U.S. In its first year to be eligible for the list, ProfitFuel ranked 461 nationally, with an impressive 3-year average annual sales growth of 683 percent.

If you know an up and coming small business owner who needs some help growing their clientele, ProfitFuel is worth a look.

HEALTH: DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE A DIRTY NECK OR DIABETES?

As most of you know by now, I'm not blogging as much as I used to. Our family is getting our home ready to receive foster children this year. There is much to be done.

In the process of becoming foster parents it is required that everyone in our household have a physical examination. I've been busy taking all of our children to the doctor. The twins needed their 5 year shots, Kazz needed a booster and Vinnie was pretty well up to date with all of his requirements. All were healthy and there was nothing to make me think that Brise would be any different.

Last Monday I took Brise in to see our pediatrician. I expected to be in and out of there in a little over an hour just like we were with the rest of the boys. Little did I know that we would have a life changing experience that day. Please know that it could have been MUCH worse but that day did change our lifestyle, for the better.

We went in and Brise hopped up on the counter. The nurse took him out to weigh him and log his height. Brise is tall for his age. He's 5'6" tall, 11 years old and wears a size 13 shoe. When they came back into the room she took his blood pressure.

"hmm...let me do that again" She took it again.
"hmmm...this cuff isn't working correctly." She took the cuff off, left the room and came back with another cuff. She installed it and took his blood pressure again.

"His blood pressure is high." She said, and promptly left the room.

I had a hard time processing that. I was wondering how an 11 year old could have high blood pressure. She walked out the door before I could ask how high.

We go to a teaching pediatrician so the first doctor to walk in the door was just on his second day of rounds. He was nervous so we chatted a bit and I tried to answer all of his OVERLY thorough questions. We were questioned to ad nauseum...or so I thought. Little did I know that he had spotted something right away that caused him to ask so many questions.

He walked out the door and immediately came back in with a third year doctor. She began talking as if I knew what the heck she was talking about. She began talking about diabetes and how we need to change our eating.

"I see here that you drink soft drinks in your home. Those need to be stricken from your diet Brisan. Do you understand that?"

My head was swimming. What is she talking about?!

She then began explaining what foods we need to eat and how much. She talked and talked. She handed Brise literature. She talked some more. She handed me literature.

What is going on here? They haven't even looked in his ears yet!! I am very seldom at a loss for words. This day, I was lost.

They left the room. I could see that my son was on the verge of tears. I WAS on the verge of tears. Neither one of us could understand "Why" They were, all of the sudden, ranting about food and sugar levels and diabetes. I explained to Brise that if there is a problem with his blood sugar that we can certainly change our eating habits. I told him that he would NOT do this alone and our entire family would be on board with any diet changes.

The next doctor to walk in, THANK GOD, was our pediatrician. She's so gentle, sweet and knows just what to say to help her patients stay calm and understand what is going on.

"Hello agian. Aren't you tired of seeing me yet? Is this the last son?"

"Yes," I said. "What's going on? Do we need to be worried here? Does he have diabetes? How do you know that without a test?"

Those who know me in person, KNOW that those questions came tumbling out of my mouth before she could get a word in edgewise. I needed answers, NOW!

"Do you see these marks here on his neck?"

"Yes, I keep telling him to wash it but even when I try to wash his neck it won't go away."

"That's Acanthosis Nigricans. That is a marker for diabetes. If he does not have it, he's on his way to getting it. In adults the marks begin on the armpits or groin."

My jaw fell. I nearly cried right there but I held it together. I saw slight marks like that on Kazz's arms. Not dark, just light. Now, She had my attention.

Long story short, Brise had a LOT of blood drawn the next day. (9 viles) He does NOT have diabetes yet, but was diagnosed with insulin resistance. His Insulin level is quite high. You can bet, dear reader, that our eating habits have changed. We are on a schedule and we've bought more fruits and veggies than this house has ever seen. I am on a search for a diabetic brownie. If you have any great diabetic dessert recipes, we're all ears in this household!

They are going to monitor his blood pressure. We'll be heading back to the doc in a few weeks. I thank God that we caught this before it turned into diabetes. I hope this post will help another mother do the same for her family.

If you recognize these markings on any of your family members, or a lighter version of them that fade and come back, you'll want to read this information.

--------------------------------------

Acanthosis Nigricans is a disorder that may begin at any age. It causes velvety, light-brown-to-black, markings usually on the neck, under the arms or in the groin. Eating too much of the wrong foods, especially starches and sugars, can cause insulin resistance. This will result in elevated insulin levels. Most patients with Acanthosis Nigricans have a higher insulin level than those of the same weight without Acanthosis Nigricans. Elevated levels of insulin in most cases probably cause Acanthosis Nigricans. The elevated insulin levels in the body activates insulin receptors in the skin, forcing it to grow abnormally. Reducing the circulating insulin by dieting or medication can lead to improvement of the skin problem.

OUT OF THE CLEAR BLUE or A MEMORY OF CHRISTMAS PAST

We used to be a foster family. During that time, out of the clear blue, our family was adopted by the local Harley Bikers Chapter. We're not talking about the scary Hell's Angels kind of bikers. We're talking CEO's of banks, riding for the fun of it because we have the money to do it, kind of bikers. They raised $36,000 and decided to adopt 5 foster families that year to buy Christmas presents, clothes, household items etc...for them. We were picked out of all the families! What a total blessing. When I got the telephone call I thought they were going to ask us to help with the event! LOL We were so excited we couldn't stand it!

Out of the clear blue that year, a friend of Brian's gave us bunk beds for the twins. They were a very nice set with dressers and a desk attached. Out of the clear blue, another friend brought over bags of clothes and some cool games for the boys. We are feeling showered with friendship and love that Christmas.

I say all of this to point out that though we weren't in dire straits, the outpouring of love that year overwhelmed us. We hadn't even sent out feelers to say we would like these things, they were just given to us. That was truly a blessed Christmas full of memories! Can you just imagine the love people must feel if they really needed the items immediately? That is why we try to volunteer throughout the year. That Christmas we felt, first hand, the joy it is to recieve. Now, we continue to enjoy the feeling of giving.

OCTOBER...FLEW!!

Through the month of October we have been very busy. I've been too busy to blog! We have made a family decision to become a foster family again. We have moved bedrooms around and made room for some sisters/daughters in our home. The boys picked a pretty, light shade of pink for the now vacant bedroom. After moving the items out of the room we scraped chalk paint and two layers of border off the walls. After that we primed the walls and ceiling. Now we wait...6-8 months for Brian and I to complete our classes and homestudy.

In October we went to the cider mill, took homeschool pictures. We had our first family photo taken as a "large" family. We were supposed to go "Trunk or Treating" at our city hall parking garage but when we arrived there were so many people there we were amazed. The doors weren't opened yet and the weather was too cold to stand out in a huge line of hundreds of people, so we opted to go to the local bulk candy store instead. That was a blast. The kids filled their candy bags full of candy, we spent $21.00 and everyone was happy.

Tomorrow we go to a Fire Station with our homeschool group tomorrow. We are planning to head to Kentucky for Halloween where we will go to my Aunt Tena and Uncle Mike's house for a bon fire and trick or treating.

Our daily schoolwork has taken on our usual form. Instead of using the Dangerous Book for Boys we've reverted back to our tried and true Alpha Omega Lifepacs. They are just too easy to use. They are comprehensive and make life much easier on a large family like ours. The boys do 3 pages in each subject, we have a Bible lesson, we do any extra curricular activities that we may like and life spins peacefully. I think we will have to use The Dangerous Book as a supplement for fun activities. They will learn as we do the activities. It just turns out that I actually do not have time to plan the lessons like I wanted to. One of these days...aw...who am I kidding? Our life is full, abundant and busy. I don't even think I want to "slow down" enough to be able to plan lessons and activities from one book. That takes more time than the actual activity. Not a great idea for me it turns out. So we're going to pick and choose from The DBFB as the mood strikes.

SEPTEMBER 29th THRU OCTOBER 10th

For the most part the boys worked with worksheets from Edhelper.com They read their books and began their book reports. On the 8th Brian took the day off and we went to have the kids "school" pictures made in Richmond. Zach and Brooke came in for he weekend on Friday. We went to the Detroit Zoo on Friday and The Detroit Science Center on Saturday. At the Science center we watched a planetarium show about Astronomy that is kookoo. The movie was called "Bad Astronomy" and explained what a "real" UFO would be, why Astrology is silly and how the movies are completely idiotic. They pretty much blew all the fun stuff out of the water and busted a lot of bubbles.

We also saw an IMAX Theater show about how the earth is losing its water supply. We took a ride down the Colorado straight through the Grand Canyon. The water is absolutely depleting. It's terrible. After the Science Center closed we took a ride on the People Mover to view Detroit in all it's glory. After our full circle People Mover ride we went down to The Hard Rock Cafe Detroit to eat. Then we went home.

Next week we hope to get more written schoolwork accomplished though I do believe this past weekend was a much better education than any crazy "book learnin'."

HOW CAN A PARENT TEACH THAT!?

How Can Homeschoolers Teach Subjects They Don’t Know?

Are you intimidated by professionals who criticize you and say that you’re not able to provide an adequate education because you don’t have a formal education?

Look at the reality of the homeschool vs. the public school. The majority of public school teachers have a formal education and are credentialed by the State. But look at who is getting the better education. Homeschoolers outshine their public school counterparts on every level! It is the homeschooled child who wins spelling bees, geography bees, and SATs.

Homeschooling parents cannot and do not have to be experts in every subject matter. When faced with teaching a course unfamiliar to them, whether it be calculus or English grammar, homeschoolers can take advantage of the flexibility of homeschooling and the many resources available to them.

Here are some suggestions to help you handle subjects you don’t feel qualified to teach.

1. First of all relax and have faith in yourself! You will always be the best teacher for your children. You have been teaching them since their birth.

2. Join a homeschooling group or association that follows your style and philosophy. You can find them on the Internet or ask the public school district office for a list or organization.

3. Other homeschoolers are your best resource. Don’t hesitate to ask how others have overcome a dilemma. They probably have dealt with a similar challenge.

4. Network any way you can — from the grocery store line to formal organizations.

5. Network online. Find blogs, homeschooling chat rooms, forums, and discussion groups. Join in, share ideas, and see how others handled dilemmas and challenges.

6. Get help from others. Schedule course time when other people are available. Your spouse may be good at a particular subject. A friend or colleague may be willing to teach your kids calculus. Don’t forget to pay them. If money is a problem, offer to pay them with services. Or have your kids perform services to repay them, such as moving lawns, washing cars, or cooking meals. Be creative, bartering is a great way of payment.

7. Form a consortium and trade talents. You may have a gift for math while another parent is good at science. Find out who is good at what. A passion for a subject is more important than a formal education.

8. Hire a tutor. You can find tutors for a reasonable price at the local public school. The school office usually keeps a list of honor students who are willing to tutor. Sit in on the tutoring sessions so you can learn along with your child.

9. Contact a tutoring center in your area. You can use them on a one-time basis, periodically or for a long period of time. They are great for troubleshooting and clearing up a confusion.
